Vanessa Kachadurian- Armenia celebrate women's business Berd Bears

Oh Yes we own some of these cute bears, here in the Kachadurian household.
You can order from them, online or on your next trip to Armenia do as we do. Stuff a suitcase full of BEARS!
Watch the short video on how these adorable bears are made.
Help these women to support their families.

Dozens of energetic women living in remote provinces of Armenia, believing in themselves and in a few foreigners, have turned their talent and skills into income.

In an average room of an average building in the town of Berd, some 200 kilometers north of Yerevan, women make bears called ‘Berd’. Their eyes, made of buttons, get a naïve and kind expression in the hands of these eager women. And because of the small woolen waistcoats, which have flags of different countries on them, Berd Bears have traveled throughout the world.

The bears are made by 16 women of Berd’s Women Resources Center Foundation. Anahit Badalyan, 29, head of the foundation, who after studying journalism at Yerevan State University for six years settled in Berd, says their work has succeeded since the very beginning.

When Badalyan looked into registering the foundation in March of this year, she was told that she must pay a $300 bribe for the seal.

“Later I was surprised at the change in style of work of the Ministry of Justice – no bribe, normal treatment, they have done everything very fast, and even the executive called and said that they had changed some part of the (foundation’s) charter, so that we might succeed. After just a short time I went to take the seal, I paid only 15,000 drams (about $40), some state duties and everything was ready,” she recalls.

Soon, John Hart, a Peace Corps volunteer arranged a meeting to Berd by Timothy Straight, Honorary Consul of Finland and Norway in Armenia. Straight, who has been working with Armenian NGOs and agencies for more than 10 years had previously helped women in southern provinces create similar projects. Straight even opened a small shop in Yerevan where hand-made crafts were sold.

“Tim came, I gathered the women, he looked at their work and a handmade bear caught his eye. The creators of the bear were women of Sister Hanna’s group (Sister Hanna is a Lebanon-based German who has spent seven years in Berd, and taught the fancywork art to many women there). Tim asked if they can knit that bear, and they replied that they can knit anything.”

Nine months have passed; the women have made 100 bears, which are all sold thanks to Straight’s efforts. However, they did not stop with “Berd Bears”. They have also made the characters (two bears, a raven, a bee and a butterfly) of an environmental cartoon, created with the cooperation of KASSart Studio and Homeland Handicrafts NGO. Additionally the women are also producing jam and berry products.

Each woman of the Berd Womens Resource Center earns 440 drams (about $1.20) per hour, which makes about 70,000 drams (about $200) per month when there are enough orders. On average, each woman works about 3-4 hours per day and 3-4 days per week.

Until the 1990s Berd had been a factory town (production of thermostats and electrical relay switches, milk fermentation, tobacco reprocessing, weaving, wine, canned food). About 80 percent of the factory employees were women, now unemployed, so the chance to earn money again is a big achievement for them.

Homeland Handicrafts NGO was founded by Straight, who aimed to create jobs which would need traditional Armenian craftwork, using traditional materials. Since May 2010, the NGO has been cooperating with Goris, Kapan and Meghri towns of the (southern) Syunik province.

“We take their techniques and develop new products -- traditional techniques, traditional materials, but new products. And that’s what people find fascinating,” says Straight who dealt with product development for 25 years, and tries to teach province-based women business and marketing – packaging, trademark, deadlines, quality management.

Now that production is rolling, Straight says it is time for the women to deal with the market, to be introduced and present their products, to use the modern accessible Internet platforms – online social networks, etc.

“To be honest none of them are business women yet. The next step is to find customers without my help, and once they can do it, it would be the perfect situation. They need to be businesses, they need to start marketing themselves, exporting themselves, finding markets themselves,” Straight says. “Sometimes we fail, like in case with Meghri, sometimes we have quick success like in Berd when we start with 0 money. By October I was sold out; I have ordered 50 new bears for them.”

Until know the bears were exclusively sold in Armenia and transported out in suitcases to the buyers. Currently the bear which costs 15,000 drams (about $40) can be ordered through Straight via his blog http://homeland-handicrafts.blogspot.com/ or through Anahit Badalyan if contacted via her blog http://berd-women.blogspot.com/.

The work is inspiring to Badalyan, who felt uneasy at the beginning.

“My son Gagik is four years old. While making the cartoon and the other bears I have experimented on him. I prepared parties for him with the bears and other characters, and he gave me advice, saying that the bear is fat, it must be a little thinner, or it is heavy, or its eyes look kinder this way, etc. We made bears, but we did not have a single bear toy in our house, I took some to my house and then brought them back again. And now my son is sleeping with a bear toy, which gives me confidence that the bears will greatly succeed in the future,” says the future business lady of Berd. If you all order these handmade bears we can support these businesses. I have purchased them and delivered to orphanages throughout Armenia. Vanessa Kachadurian

Vanessa Kachadurian- Armenian descendant still operate Venus Wafers

http://www.patriotledger.com/business/x1738134728/Venus-Wafers-of-Hingham-goes-natural
Employees at Venus Wafers like to say that most people have eaten their products, even though few people have heard of the company. The Hingham-based company sells baked snacks under five of its own brands and dozens of grocers’ private labels.
With the launch of its newest product next month, Venus Wafers hopes to raise its profile by aligning itself with the burgeoning non-genetically modified food movement. It’s adding a new line of water crackers under its Original Mariner’s Biscuit label, after having received verification from the Non-GMO Project. The Bellingham, Wash.-based nonprofit verifies products made without genetically-modified ingredients.
Venus is targeting specialty food stores and their finicky clientele who are willing to pay extra for snacks made of natural ingredients without chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
“I think we can firmly say this is the healthiest water cracker known to the world,” said Hillary Woodyatt, the company’s director of sales.
In addition to being the first wafer confirmed by the Non-GMO Project, the hexagonal cracker is certified as Kosher by the Orthodox Union and vegan by the Vegan Action/Vegan Awareness Foundation.
As consumers become more educated about food ingredients, the pressure intensifies among manufacturers to keep up with the latest trends, Venus Wafers President Michael Thompson said. “Every year you can bring out a cracker and people say, ‘That’s good, but is it organic?’ Every year, the requirements seem to change and get tighter,” he said.
Venus Wafers’ history stretches to 1931, when Napoleon Barmakian founded the company in Watertown. A diamond-cutter by trade and baker by hobby, Barmakian opened a storefront selling whole-wheat wafers.
Specializing in ethnic snacks reflecting the family’s Armenian heritage, the company moved to Braintree before building a new bakery in Hingham’s South Shore Park in 1983.
The 28,000-square-foot bakery is now at 70 percent of its manufacturing capacity for a single shift of workers. Early in 2010, the company leased another 26,500-square-foot building in South Shore Park for office and shipping functions. About 45 people work for the company.
The company is now owned by Barmankian’s grandson, Luke. Thompson, a 30-year cracker industry executive, was hired to manage the day-to-day operations three years ago.
About 60 percent of the company’s sales are private-label manufacturing for supermarket chains and airline snack packs. It also sells 25 types of crackers under Nejaime’s Lavasch, Venus, Haute Cuisine, CaPeachio’s, Vitavigor and Mariner brands. They are primarily sold at health food stores and specialty grocers.
The new Mariner’s Biscuit is set to ship during the first week of December, and company representatives will show it off at food industry trade shows in coming months. If the new product takes off at specialty stores, Venus will seek private-label manufacturing deals with supermarket chains.
“That’s our strategy, quite frankly,” Thompson said. “We market our brands to the specialty retailers, but our recipes are available to the mainstream supermarkets. That’s it in a nutshell.”

Vanessa Kachadurian Armenian Tourism increases

http://www.messenger.com.ge/issues/2453_september_29_2011/2453_econ_three.html

According to Armenia’s economic ministry by the end of 2011 Armenia could have been visited by 800,000 tourists. This is so far unprecedented. In the best tourist years for Armenia were during Soviet Union when it attracted around 600,000 tourists. The analysts estimate that while visiting Armenia tourists spend average 1,000 USD. So, if the number of tourists by the end of 2011 will be 800,000 they will approximately bring into the country 800 mln USD. This is an impressive number - approximately the same as the money entering the budget from exports.

Of course many visitors to Armenia are representatives of the Armenian diaspora abroad or people with double citizenship. They spend as much or maybe more than ordinary tourists. However the structure of their expenditure is different. If so called ordinary tourists spend money on souvenirs or hotels and tours, diaspora representatives spend money for presents, visiting domestic attractions and many of them for medical purposes. There is a tendency in the country for more traditional tourists to enter the country. Iranian tourists also visit Armenia. They save on the transportation costs because they travel by bus and personal transport. The Armenian government facilitates the process of developing the tourism infrastructure, however prices on air tickets are expensive, though hotels prices are coming down. There are many tourists in Armenia from Russia. Many Russians come to Armenia to gamble in the casinos as such gambling houses are banned in Russia.

Vanessa Kachadurian-Gorbachev Organization Green Cross Int'l to support alternative energy in Armenia

A solar power generator plant in Spitak, Armenia, will get financial help from Green Cross International, an organization founded by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
So far the project has attracted $8 million in investments. The plant will produce up to 1,000 units with capacities that range between 3 and 32 kilowatt. The latter can supply electricity to a household.
Vahagn Hameazaspanyan, head of the solar power plant program, said the plant will give Armenia an economic boost since there is huge demand for this type of equipment.
He criticized the government for not helping Armenia’s solar power sector, despite recently approving an energy security plan.

Vanessa Kachadurian-Armenian Ukrainian trade agreement

Armenia President Serzh Sargsyan and Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych

http://news.am/eng/news/65408.html

Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan, who is on official visit to Ukraine, participated with his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych in Armenian-Ukrainian business forum opening at trade-industrial palace.
Sargsyan delivered a speech in forum and told that Armenian-Ukrainian collaboration has a great potential and there is mutual interest in implementing it, president’s press service informs Armenian News-NEWS.am.
“I exchanged views with President Yanukovych on measures taken for overcoming results of global crisis, which influenced our bilateral trade and economic collaboration. Ukraine is the sixth trade partner of Armenia while it was the third in 2008. We should move more dynamically to achieve progress.
We should deepen collaboration on new technologies, energy, communication, and IT spheres. Cultivation of agricultural goods can also serve as a good asset. Special attention should be paid to the equal balance of tariffs for transit transportation, which will directly assist development of trade partnership.
Armenia is open for mutually beneficial projects in different spheres. Both governments will try to do everything for business to be comprehensible and transparent.
It is important that the Armenian-Ukrainian business forum supports exchange of information and direct contacts of businessmen, as any business first of all is trust.
I believe this forum will open new projects. I would like to further strengthen the partnership between our countries, for the benefit of our people. Ukrainian president is well aware of Armenia. Thus, any investment made in both Armenia and Ukraine is 100 percent guaranteed,” the speech reads

Vanessa Kachadurian-German Company interested in Armenian Chemical Giant

Nairet Chemical Plant- Yerevan, Armenia

http://www.azatutyun.am/content/article/24252995.html

Good reporting from my friends at Azatutyun (Liberty) Lets hope and pray that Armenians can control Armenian business.

A German engineering company has expressed an interest in managing Armenia’s largest chemical enterprise facing an uncertain future, the Armenian government announced on Friday.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources said the Chemieanlagenbau Chemnitz company, also known as CAC, has been the only bidder in an international tender for the right to operate the Nairit plant in Yerevan.

“The German company specializing in chemical engineering has submitted a bid,” the ministry spokeswoman, Lusine Harutiunian, told RFE/RL’s Armenian service. “Ministry specialists and representatives of that company will hold a meeting soon.”

“The company’s representatives will present their capabilities in this sector, after which our further actions will become clear,” she said, speaking the day after the official deadline for the submission of bids.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Armen Movsisian said on June 10 that three foreign firms are participating in the tender. He did not name any of them.

The government and Rhinoville Property Limited, a British-registered obscure firm that owns 90 percent of Nairit, called the bidding earlier this year in another attempt to revive the Soviet-era industrial giant that has struggled to survive for much of the past two decades.

Erratic manufacturing operations at Nairit ground to a halt following the onset of the global financial crisis in late 2008. The plant, whose main product is synthetic rubber, is now operating at a fraction of its capacity.

Only some 500 of its more than 3,000 employees go to work on a regular basis at present. They have not been paid for at least two months.

Several dozen Nairit workers demonstrated outside the presidential palace in Yerevan earlier this month to demand their back wages. Officials from President Serzh Sarkisian’s staff assured them that the wage arrears will be eliminated in the next few weeks.

According to the Nairit administration, all workers received wages and leave pay for March shortly after the protest. “We hope that the rest will be paid soon,” a company spokeswoman told RFE/RL’s Armenian service.

In what may have been a related development, the Nairit director general, Vahan Melkonian, stepped down ahead of an annual meeting of the company’s shareholders held on Thursday. Neither he, nor the company gave any reasons for the resignation.

Vanessa Kachadurian-Armenian Chamber of Commerce

http://www.reporter.am/index.cfm?objectid=CB7EC720-8ED0-11E0-81220003FF3452C2
Glendale, Calif. - The Armenian American Chamber of Commerce was represented at the inaugural meeting of the Armenian Trade Network in Yerevan and president of the AACC's Central Committee Nick Hacopian was elected to represent the ATN for the Americas and Australia.
The ATN is a network organization of Armenian chambers of commerce and business associations from Armenia and the Diaspora. The April 29-30 meeting was organized by Armenia's Ministry of Diaspora, the Canada-Armenia Business Council and the Armenian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Conceptual discussions for the formation of the Armenian Trade Network were started in 2002 and 2004. The newly reenergized organization is an independent, non-governmental organization established as a business entity with a united approach toward advocacy for business and the promotion of commerce. Since 2004 the April Summit was the first meeting of its kind for the newly reestablished ATN.
"As a non-governmental organization we now have a viable chance for success as an independent entity operating with a united approach toward advocacy and better global business ties" said Hacopian of the ATN. He further added "as Regional officers we are responsible for organizing groups in neighboring countries where chambers of commerce don't already exist. For example Moscow has the largest Armenian community in the world and we don't have a chamber of commerce representing Armenian business interests there."
The Armenian Trade Network was established as an international organization to bridge ties between Armenia and the Diaspora. Its mission will be to support the development of Armenian chambers of commerce and business councils active throughout the world, to promote the creation of similar associations in other communities, to stimulate business ties between Diasporan communities, and to continue to foster partnerships between Armenia and the Diaspora. The ATN will focus on networking efforts between existing Armenian businesses worldwide and its member organizations.
A total of 12 delegates from Armenia and the Diaspora attended the meeting, including; US, Armenia, Canada, France, Australia, Lebanon, Belgium, Iran, and Artsakh. The meeting of the delegates was called to discuss the creation of an international trade and business network for Armenia, and to establish its structure.
Participating member organizations will be represented on the ATN's Board with one member from each organization. The executive body of the Board of Directors is comprised of President, four Regional Vice Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer of the President's country - for two year terms.
Mr. Vahram Pirjanian, Canada-Armenia Business Council, was unanimously elected President of the ATN Board. Four Regional Vice-Presidents were also elected and are as follows: Nick Hacopian of the Armenian American Chamber of Commerce for the Americas and Australia, Martin Sargsyan of the Armenian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Armenia and the CIS, Jacques Avdoian representing France for Europe and Nazareth Sabounjian of the Lebanese Assembly of Armenian Businessmen representing the Middle East. Hratch Kaspar and Joe Yelkezian, from the Canada-Armenia Business Council, were elected as Secretary and Treasurer - respectively.
The next meeting of the Armenian Trade Network will be held in May 2012 in Stepanakert, Armenia.
The Armenian American Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1999. The organization serves the Armenian American business community and encourages greater ties and collaboration with Armenia and its business community.
The Chamber can be reached via email at aacc@armenianchamber.com or by phone at 818.247.0196.

Vanessa Kachadurian-Armenian International Trade Network established

http://www.aysor.am/en/news/2011/05/17/armenian-trade-net/
Recently a conference was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Diaspora of various Armenian chambers of commerce and business associations from all over the world. The event was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Armenia Mr. Tigran Sargsyan. During the two day deliberations delegates representing twelve organizations resolved to establish a global business association for all Armenian entrepreneurs and called it the Armenian Trade Network, a name reminiscent of the powerful old Armenian trade networks that linked East and West through trade for several centuries. Towards the end of the conference, the founding delegates were welcomed by the President of Armenia HE Serge Sargsyan who congratulated and welcomed the initiative, valued its significance for all Armenians and encouraged Diasporan entrepreneurs to seek out business opportunities in Armenia. We have asked the Secretary of the Board of the international Armenian Trade Network about the status of the newly established organization and the expected launch of its activities. Mr. Hrach Kaspar (representing the Canada Armenia Business Council) replied that: “for the upcoming two years, the founding assembly of the Armenian Trade Network entrusted the Executive Board portfolio to the Canadian delegation, which also received the mandate to register this new organization both in Canada and an international jurisdiction. I am happy to report that the registration process is already underway and will be completed within one week, following which formal activities will commence, especially the process of consolidating information on the various Armenian business communities.”

Vanessa Kachadurian-Armenia to build new Zvartnots International Airport

http://armenianow.com/news/29779/armenia_zvartnots_airport_construction
An international airport near Armenian capital Yerevan will have a new functioning terminal by the end of this year.
According to the company managing the airport, by its technical parameters and passenger service quality the new arrivals and departures hall, due to open in October, will be the best in the region.
“At the end of the year we shall, in fact, have a new airport that will fully correspond to the International Air Transport Association’s B class airports (IATA rates airports according to A, B, C, D classes) which will double the potential of the existing airport,” said Zvartnots International Airport deputy director Andranik Shkhyan.

Zvartnots Airport opened in 1961. In 2001 the Armenian government and the Corporacion America group of Eduardo Eurnekian, an Argentine billionaire of Armenian descent, signed an agreement under which the Armenia International Airports company assumed 30-year concession management of the Zvartnots airport.

During this period large-scale activities on the improvement of the airport’s facilities and conditions have been carried out. At present, work is underway at 34,000 square meters of public area for a new terminal, for which an investment of $160 million has already been made.

According to Shkhyan, the new complex will offer 46 check-in desks instead of currently available 24, which will help avoid queues and large concentrations of people. The new facility will have separate spacious departure and arrival halls, a two-storey car park on a territory of 25,000 square meters for 600 cars at a time, or three times as many parking lots as are available today. Annually the new terminal will be able to serve up to 3 million passengers, instead of the current 1.6 million.

“During the past four years we have seen our passenger traffic increasing at an annual rate of 8-12 percent. The new airport will be able to accept up to 10 flights an hour instead of five flights today,” said Shkhyan, adding that the new complex will be fully fitted out with necessary equipment and will be able to properly serve also transit passengers.

Shkhyan also said that the current airport service rates were set in 2002 and have not been revised since then.

“Our tariffs are competitive as compared to a number of airports in Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey and are lower even than those at the airports of Vienna and London,” he said, adding that by its features the Yerevan airport twice exceeds the airports of Azerbaijan and Georgia.

A presidential building is also planned at the airport. This facility will be exclusively for serving high-ranking guests.

The total volume of investment for the construction of the new airport complex reaches $244 million. Funding is provided by Corporacion America and three banks. Most of the work is carried out by Armenia-based companies, but there are also contractors from Slovenia and Germany. A total of 600 workers are involved in the construction project.

The old airport building, according to Shkhyan, will continue to operate, but not as an airport.

“The old building will most likely become an administrative center and also a public area where it will be possible to organize conferences,” said Shkhyan.

Before the new complex is completed, passengers arriving at Zvartnots get outside through the VIP hall.

Vanessa Kachadurian-Armenia strengthening business in Europe and Persian Gulf

http://news.am/eng/news/59929.html
YEREVAN. - A total of AMD 6.2 billion from Armenia’s state budget was allocated to embassies and diplomatic representations aboard in 2010, which is AMD 2.2 billion more as compared to the same period in 2009. The spending increased after opening new Armenian embassies in Japan, Czech Republic, Brazil, the Netherlands, Spain, Kuwait and Iraq.
Opening of new embassies in European countries was due to the need to strengthen Armenia’s presence in Europe in the light of the country’s European integration, Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Manasaryan said, presenting the report on 2010 budget fulfillment.
“The opening of the embassy in Kuwait was economically expedient and was conditioned by Armenia’s aspiration to strengthen its presence in the Persian Gulf,” he added.
According to him, Armenia state budget received AMD 2 billion from embassies in the reporting period mostly due to state duty.

Vanessa Kachadurian-Armenian President Pledges Tax Breaks for Manufacturers

Armenian President Pledges Tax Breaks For Innovative Manufacturers

Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian visits a newly constructed building for young scientists in Yerevan on April 9.
April 10, 2011
YEREVAN -- Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian has announced that companies and entrepreneurs that launch innovative manufacturing operations in the country will be eligible for major tax breaks, RFE/RL's Armenian Service reports.

At a meeting with members of leading business associations in Yerevan on April 8, Sarkisian reaffirmed the government's pledge to improve the business environment in Armenia. He said the government will also draft fiscal measures to encourage job creation.

"I want to declare to everyone here that that any manufacturing operation that will be set up in the republic on an innovative basis...to put it simply, if it manufactures something that is not manufactured in the republic today, we as a state are ready to help it by all possible means," Sarkisian said. "We are ready to give tax privileges in the first instance.

"For instance, we are ready to exempt [those manufacturers] from profit tax for three to four years and postpone the payment of value-added tax (VAT)," he said. "We are ready to give other assistance."

The government already selectively delays the collection of VAT from industrial equipment imported by local firms. This privilege is not automatic and has to be approved by the ministerial cabinet on a case-by-case basis.

Under Armenian law, the rate of corporate income tax is fixed at 20 percent for all businesses.

Many businesses, especially large and lucrative firms owned by tycoons with ties to the government, have long been suspected of underreporting their earnings. Proceeds from profit tax accounted for less than 15 percent of the government's total tax revenues last year.

Sarkisian met with entrepreneurs at one of three industrial enterprises in Yerevan that he visited on April 8. He has shown a keen interest in economic affairs in the past month, discussing them with central and regional government officials and inspecting businesses around the country. Some observers link this activity with renewed opposition demonstrations.

Sarkisian told Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian and other top officials on March 11 to adopt a more hands-on approach to economic development. He said it is essential for speeding up GDP growth and easing hardship in Armenia.

Vanessa Kachadurian- Hye Quality Armenian Bakery

Hye Quality's History - A Part of the Fresno
Community for Many Generations

Hye Quality Bakery was established in 1957 by Yervant and Grace Ganimian (parents of the firm’s current president, Sammy Ganimian) shortly after the family moved from Boston to California’s San Joaquin Valley. Both parents had held demanding jobs in Boston, he as head baker at Beth Israel Hospital and she as manager of the family-owned pharmacy. Their original plans called for Yervant to pursue his trade as a master baker, freeing his wife to raise their children at home.

The plan did not come to fruition, and instead the Ganimians established their own business, Hye Quality Bakery, because they perceived a strong market in the Fresno area’s large Armenian population for high-quality, home-style Armenian baked goods. (Hye means "Armenian," hence the company’s name.) From the outset the family bakery produced quality Armenian cracker breads and other baked goods.

By 1978, having outgrown the 1,200-square-foot rental space it had occupied from the beginning, Hye Quality decided to construct a much larger facility equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. In the process it created a production line that both duplicated the handmade quality for which the firm was known and also produced sufficient volume to make national distribution a reality.

The family recipe, still followed to this day, clearly has withstood the test of time, and Sammy Ganimian has pledged to continue the father-to-son tradition of providing customers with the finest baked goods possible

Armenian influence on the Rice-a-Roni franchise.

( Deeba Yavrom/Staff )«123»OAKLAND -- As the first inductee into the philanthropy category -- new this year at the 18th Annual Alameda County Women's Hall of Fame awards ceremony Saturday -- Piedmont's Lois DeDomenico will be honored for her extensive, years-long, ongoing support of many local charities and nonprofits, including Girls Inc., Chabot Space & Science Center, the new East Bay Community Foundation building in downtown Oakland, plus a current capital campaign to build a resource center for girls, and much, much more.

Oh, and she's the Rice-A-Roni lady, too.

"Well, I'd rather focus on philanthropy than the rice, but yes, that's me," the elegant, silver-haired woman said last week, seated on a sofa in her home with her longhair rag doll cat named Max flopping around in her arms.

And while DeDomenico would prefer to keep her role in developing the "San Francisco Treat" in the background, there's no denying it's a delightful story, immediately bringing cable cars and catchy commercials to mind.

Originally from Canada, she met her future husband in San Francisco in the 1940s. Tom DeDomenico was one of four sons of a turn-of-the-last-century Italian immigrant who worked with their father, Domenico "Charlie" DeDomenico, to develop the pasta business that would later be known as the Golden Grain Macaroni Company.

In 1946, Lois and Tom, young newlyweds, rented a room from an Armenian woman in the city. She taught Lois how to make rice pilaf, and

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

it soon became a favorite at DeDomenico family dinners. Then in the '50s, Tom's brother Vince combined it with a chicken-soup mix made at the plant, plus rice and vermicelli, and named it Rice-A-Roni.

The Quaker Oats Company later purchased Golden Grain in 1986, and Tom DeDomenico passed away in 1992. But Lois DeDomenico, now in her 80s, still has people ask her about the product all the time.

"I go to a health spa once a year in Mexico, and even there I meet young women from all over the country who know about Rice-A-Roni and start singing the jingle," she said.

Lois DeDomenico is pleased, but surprised, at the Hall of Fame honor, she said, and defers recognition to other board members and staff of the groups she supports. She joined the board of Girls Inc. in Oakland several years ago, and thoroughly believes in the organization's mission to "inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold," she said.

"That really grabbed me, and I wanted to support that goal."

She most recently embarked on a capital campaign for a girls' resource center to be built in downtown Oakland. So far, the campaign is halfway toward its goal to reach $10.5 million for the center.

The 18th Annual Alameda County Women's Hall of Fame luncheon and awards ceremony will be held Saturday, at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 4700 Lincoln Ave., Oakland.

The program raises money for local charities addressing women's health issues.

The Women's Hall of Fame also sponsors a youth scholarship to help a girl or young woman further her education or training. Tickets to the luncheon and awards ceremony are $75. Call 510-272-6510 or go to www.acgov.org/cao/halloffame.

Vanessa Kachadurian- Delta Faucets, MASCO Manoogian family developed the 1 arm faucet

Alex Manoogian

It all started at the end of the roaring '20s. That's when an Armenian immigrant, fleeing from a life of persecution in Turkey, landed on the shores of America. His name was Alex Manoogian.

The eldest son of a grain merchant, Alex spoke five languages — but none of them English. He settled in Detroit with nothing more than a suitcase and $50 in his pocket. Driven by his determination to survive and succeed, Alex took a job as a general laborer and pledged to bring his family here to give them a better life in the United States.

Alex was fired from his first job as a skilled machinist because he wasn't one — at least not yet. But he knew what it took to make a great machinist and acquired the skills he needed. He was an intelligent man with a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

He saved what money he could to buy a screw machine. Eventually, he invested in a few more pieces of equipment. With the automobile industry booming in Detroit, it was the perfect place for him to start a business. By 1928, Alex and two partners took the first initials of their last names and $5000 and set up Masco Screw Products Company.

Although the Great Depression years were difficult, in 1930 Masco got its first contract of $7000 from the Hudson Motor Car Company. From its humble beginnings in a small loft, Masco's annual sales soon exceeded a million dollars. In 1937, Masco was listed on the Detroit Stock Exchange.

Sales continued growing, and when World War II took center stage, Alex supported his new country by diverting some of his production to military needs, such as bomb fuses and other types of materials. Despite the many challenges that came his way, he viewed each one as an opportunity. He was always on the watch for new products to produce. Relentless in his pursuits, he built the Masco business little by little.

Armenia`s pharmaceutical industry developing

January 29, 2011 | 17:06

The economic crisis did not affect Armenia`s pharmaceutical industry Karine Minasyan, Deputy Minister of Economy, stated at a shirt-sleeves meeting with industry representatives in Aghveran, Armenia.

Armenia`s pharmaceutical industry recorded 8% growth in 2009, and 18.7% growth last January-November. Also, Armenia was exporting its pharmaceutical products to Europe rather than to the other CIS states. which is evidence of higher quality of Armenian pharmaceutical products.

Minasyan also reported that fewer people are now employed at the 18 Armenian pharmaceutical companies. She hopes the reason is companies` enhanced efficiency.

The industry representatives said that they receive attractive offers to transfer their businesses to other countries, particularly to Georgia.

Minasyan admitted that many countries have revised their tax rates since the crisis. In Armenia, however, it is not an issue on the agenda. Armenia is trying to create free economic zones for pharmaceutical companies to work without paying VAT, she said.

Vanessa Kachadurian the great American Yogurt Columbo (Colombosian) family

AS AMERICAN AS YOGURT
In the Public View
by Hrag Vartanian

Who would've guessed that the kitchen of Rose and Sarkis Colombosian would give rise to one of the most important ingredients of America's health food revolution? "They certainly didn't have any idea. My father died in 1966 so he didn't see any of the growth really. My mother saw most of it, she was around until 1981," retired yogurt man and son of the founders, Bob Colombosian responds.

Bob Colombosian sold Colombo Yogurt to General Mills in 1977 but recently he has been coaxed out of retirement to become an integral part of a new television ad campaign that has appeared on CBS, NBC and FOX in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Chicago.

"General Mills called and invited my wife and I out to dinner in Boston. A few weeks later they called and asked if I wanted to be in a commercial. Eventually, they integrated my wife, Alice, and the rest is history. When they asked for my input, I wanted to emphasize that it was an Armenian company when it started and they agreed with all that. In the first ad, I had a little bit of Armenian such as, Assiga shad hamov eh [This is very delicious]. They let me do those things and they let me show Armenia on the map. The Colombo name sounds Italian, so I emphasized the Colombosian," he explains about the first ad that has made him a household face in many places in the country.

Speaking to Mr. Colombosian you sense he is taking all of the newfound fame in stride, "It depends where I go, they all recognize me but it's ok. They look at me kind of funny and I say 'I'm the person you're thinking about'."

It is strange to think that when Mr. Colombosian's parents, originally from Chunkoosh, in Turkish Armenia, began making yogurt in 1929 at the small Colombo and Sons Creamery in Andover, Massachusetts, it would become a staple of the American diet—as American as apple pie.

He describes the difficulty his parents experienced in the early years, "They struggled, they had a little farm and one or two cows when they started. They had a garden and they would deliver vegetables and everything else with the yogurt—which was selling for 10 cents a quart with a nickel deposit.

"Mostly ethnic people bought it when we introduced it in the early 30's, like Greeks, Italians, Jews. It was very low volume and it was plain, natural yogurt back then with a cream top because it was before they had homogenization. It didn't pick up until 1950 when a big article in Reader's Digest by Dr. Gaylord Hauser appeared about how good yogurt was for you and how it made you live longer. That was the turning point. Sales picked up, and no one knew how to make yogurt back then. A lot of these dairies were asking for it and they would call me up. I would be the only one around in the New England area so I'd get all of that business.

"My brother John and I moved the company to an industrial park in Methuen, Massachusetts in 1970, and from there it really started to fly. When we first moved I was doing $300,000 a year in sales in the old place and the first year we moved to the new place it hit a million and kept doubling after that," he says. The idea to introduce Colombo's distinctive frozen yogurt was Mr. Colombosian's idea back in 1973. At first, they brought in soft serve ice cream trucks and began going around college campuses and offering free samples—he knew the market would develop and it did.

Colombo Yogurt's recent marketing campaign, headed by advertising powerhouse Saatchi & Saatchi, has drawn on Colombosian's folksy and all-American personality. The campaign is part of a larger trend that is becoming a national phenomenon. Frank Perdue of Perdue Farms and Dave Thomas of Wendy's have also been drafted into the U.S. ad wars selling their products on consumers hungry for a little bit of the homegrown.

What's Bob Colombosian's favorite yogurt flavor? "I still like the plain one." "Low-fat?" I ask. "Yeah, low fat but not the no fat variety," he admits.

"We kept having to add sugar to it so people would like it. Everything that is selling is fruit and sugar. But that's what the kids like and that's why they're going that way. It went against everything I believed in but if you want sales then you've got to do what the people want," he says.

Colombo's current success is a far cry from their humble beginnings. "The funny thing about it is that a lot of people, specially when I was going to school, would make fun of my brother and me because we had MADZOON [yogurt in Armenian] written on our delivery truck. Very few people knew what yogurt was at the time—let alone MADZOON! Now there is a whole new appreciation of our Armenian culture and ethnic foods, in particular. These same people want to associate themselves with an Armenian family that had the ingenuity to turn an idea into a health food phenomenon," Mr. Colombosian says.

Colombo Yogurt is sold throughout the American Northeast and Northwest and its frozen variety is available nationally and in a slew of countries around the world, including Switzerland, the Caribbean, and even Iceland.

Mr. Colombosian is still working with Saatchi & Saatchi and General Mills to make sure that Colombo Yogurt continues to succeed. New ads are in the works and if Mr. Colombosian gets his way, the whole country will know that it was Armenian American ingenuity that helped develop the American taste for yogurt.

While attempting to create gold by combining base metals, he discovered an alloy of copper, tin, and traces of silver with unique sound qualities. In 1618, Avedis used his secret alloy to create cymbals of spectacular clarity and power. The sound of the instruments was so extraordinary that the Sultan invited Avedis to live at court (Topkapi Palace) to make cymbals for the Sultan's elite Janissary Bands. As Avedis's reputation grew, the Sultan gave him the name "Zildjian" in Armenian (Zilciyan in Turkish), a word meaning "son of cymbal maker."

In 1623, Avedis was granted permission to leave the palace in order to start his own business in a suburb of Constantinople named Psamatia. That same business is now nearly four centuries old and has been passed down to Zildjian heirs for fifteen generations. Relocating to America in 1929, Avedis III moved the Zildjian factory to Quincy, MA and then to its current location in Norwell, MA for Zildjian's 350th Anniversary. The business passed to Avedis's son, Armand in 1977 and then to Armand's daughter, Craigie, in 1999. Currently, Craigie and her sister Debbie continue the family tradition in what is recognized as the oldest family-owned business in America.
